Who’s driving this train anyway’s?
Psalm 44:3 ”It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm and the light of your face, for you loved them.”
Everywhere we look around us screams, “what you have (or don’t have); the life you live (or don’t live); the joys (or sorrows) of the day are all produced by you; yes you, you are the chief actor/actress in this play of life.” Our culture teaches us that we are the ones that produce the life we live (for better or for worse). It teaches us that we are responsible (good or bad) for the life we live. Granted, there are consequences to our actions and the decisions we make have a bearing upon the life we lead. However, we make these decisions in one of two ways: 1. we respond to God grace or 2. we resist God’s grace. Depending upon which way we go will then depend on the outcome; but the source is always God’s grace. God desires a life beyond our wildest dreams but we will only experience this life by responding to God’s grace. God’s grace is the driving force and our response to that grace is not the grace itself but only opens the door to allow God’s grace to lead our lives in the direction God desires. God desires for our lives to be rooted in Him and today, if I root my desire in responding to God’s grace then God will uphold me, transform me, use me, protect me, guide me, and love me all along the way because God (not me) is the chief actor in this play.
Lord, thanks for reminding me again today that I am not the driving force behind my life. It is so easy for me to get caught up in the world and think that my success (or failure) is a result of my own works. Thanks for reminding me today that my success is not rooted or depending upon my own works but that my success is bound up in my ability to respond to your grace within every moment of the day. Lord, may you keep me obedient today and may every moment be a time for me to respond to your grace, grow closer to you, and live the life you desire for me today. Lord, please forgive me for my resistance of yesterday, for the way I sought to ignore your grace and not grow closer with you; thank you for working in my life regardless of my obedience. Lord, be the chief actor in my life today; forgive me and renew me that I may grow closer to you today and you may deliver me into the life you desire for me. Thank you for being my chief actor and not leaving me abandoned to myself. Amen.
