Hebrews 10:23–>Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
Our culture screams and tries to portray a false hope that is based upon optimism. Namely, in some way we are able to produce a “good” life for ourselves and family. Then, if something goes wrong, we are responsible for the error. It’s an optimism that implies we are the chief actors; that we are the one’s doing the creating; that we have in some a way the power to produce a certain kind of life and lifestyle. Those who “produce” this lifestyle are called success stories while every else is considered an “under achiever.” However, this verse reminds me today that any of my “good” or “bad” favor has nothing to do with my own ability to produce a certain lifestyle but comes from my response (or lack of) to God’s grace at work in my life. When we see through this lie of our culture and realize that God is the source of our being and that the only hope that can withstand the test of time is the hope found in Jesus Christ then we are able to begin standing on a solid ground and holding onto a hope that will never let us down. We hold onto this hope with the full knowledge of its strength because the one who offers it to us is faithful.
Lord, help me to remember today that my hope is rooted in your faithfulness. Anytime I begin to think that hope is something dependent upon my actions, my success, my creation may you break me down and remind me that you are the source of hope. When my ego wants to depend on myself may you squash my ego that you would be glorified. Keep me centered upon you today and give me the grace to depend on your hope and having full confidence that the hope I profess is real and you will eventually bring your plan into fruition. Help me to remember my job of proclaiming your hope regardless of the situation but especially in those moments of doubt remind me to cling to you and the hope that withstands the test of time and transforms the world into relationship with Jesus Christ. Amen!
