God’s intimate involvement in our lives: "The assurance of Jesus Christ."
Psalm 38:21 “Do not abandon me O Lord. Do not stand at a distance, my God.”
David is at the end of his rope in this psalm. The psalm of full of him crying out in despair over the situation of his life; David seems like he’s not sure if he can go on. Then at the end of the song is the cry of help this last plea towards God. Its as if everything else has abandoned David, everything else has stood at a distance. And then David cries out to God not to abandon him or stand at a distance as if to say, “If you abandon me; then I have no reason to go on.” What is it about life that brings David to this point? How could life be so depressing for David? He’s the King right? Is David’s brokenness something we all experience? How does David feel after he’s written the song? What is it about my life that fits into this story? What answer does God give David?
I can so relate to David; there are so many times that I find myself crying out in anguish and pain toward God; praying for deliverance from these things that seek to pull me down. There are numerous occasions where I feel completely alone, wondering if there is ever going to be light. But yet in these times a space is created for me to remember that this is not about Chad and that through Jesus Christ we are in the process of building this Church. This remembering begins with Jesus Christ. In Jesus Christ I am forever reminded that God has not abandoned me. Not only has He not abandoned me but He is intimately involved in my life whether I know if or care to know it. God does not stand at a distance but God has thrust himself into this world and taken on this world in flesh and bone. God calls his Church to continue this ministry of remembering that in Jesus Christ God has not abandoned us; does not stand at a distance to us; but God is intimately involved in every aspect of our lives and this promise is what empowers us through the troubled waters of our lives.
Lord, thank you for the reminder today that your are God; thank you for the reminder that you will never abandon us or stand at a distance when it comes to our lives. Remind me today that you are a “full contact God” that isn’t afraid to get a little dirty even if that means going to the cross to invite me into a new life that brings wholeness and a promise of presence to my life that so easily forgets your promises. Amen!
Through Jesus Christ God is intimately involved in my life forever!
