Talk 1àAndy Stanley (Louder than Words)

  • To have moral authority over others you’ve got to have proper alignment in your life….your creed and deed must align or else you cannot lead
  • 3 areas of alignment
    • Forgiveness
    • Familyàprioritize life into doing the role that no one else can do (husband to Amanda and father to children) for the role that many others can do (exàlead life group)
    • FinancesàKOG gets 1; I get 1; spend other 8
  • Sermon titlesà”spitting into the wind”

 

Talk 2àJim Collins (Good to Great)

  • Not all time in life is equal
  • Greatness is a function of choice and discipline….have to create culture of discipline
  • “Flywheel”àtook walmart 7 years to have 2 stores; took starbucks 13 years to have 5 coffee shops
  • Overreaching and undiscipline is how Greatness falls
  • “Bus”àHave to know “who” before “what”…..obsess over the who’s
    • If you wouldn’t care if they quit means they don’t belong on bus…..
  • Level 5 leadersàhumility is the signature trait….meaning the organization comes before their own success; passionate ambition for company and not self; to do what it takes to live into that passion
  • “hedge hog”à1.Deeply passionate….2.what organization can do better than anyone else…..3.Resource engine (people; money; reputation in community)
    • Disciplined actionàNEED A “STOP DOING LIST”…what doesn’t fit in 3 circles of our hedge hog
  • “and”àhold core values constant and do more things to help live into core values
    • Trouble when you confuse practices and values
    • Only need the practices to display values at our core
  • BHAGGàBig Harry Audatious Godly Goals
  • 8 practices to think about
    • 1àdiagnostic tool (how are we doing?) jimcollins.com
    • 2àhow many key seats are on the bus?  How many are filled with the right people?  What am I doing to get to 100% on the bus?
    • 3àPersonal board of directorsàpeople I look up to
    • 4àget young people in my face (the right young people)
    • 5àbuild a council (chap. 5..Good to Great)
      • What is “question” to “statement” ration in meetings?
      • Can I double it in next year?
    • 6àpackets of white space day (days to think)
    • 7àhow do I commet self to something I’m passionate about that I will take on plain of level 5 leadership
    • 8àFreed by choices; especially those that nobody sees
  • Move away from positions and titles; move to responsibilities (and ability to articulate responsibilities)
  • Prioritize 3 things to do and stop doing 3 things

Talk 3àBrenda Salter McNeil (Shake it up)

  • If we look at God….no way we could stay the same
  • We get weird in Samaria
  • Here is always a place of transition
  • In jerusalem we don’t have nothing to do but try to predict when Jesus is coming back…..but we’re called to Samaria (and ends of earth)
  • A Holy Huddle is not an option for the mission of God
  • The audacity to believe Jesus is who He says He is

Talk 4àSteven Furtick (From Promise to the Payoff)

  • God is capable of completing what He’s started in my life
  • God is preparing me for what He’s prepared for me
  • Sermon titleà”Wax on; Wax off”

 

Talk 5àSeth Godin (Tribes)….he is a secular writer….he uses words (faith, religion, heretic) to talk about organizations; not speaking directly about christianity

  • Two questions people are asking
    • 1àwho else is going to be there
    • 2àwho’s gonna lead us
  • Crowd is not the same as a tribe
  • Tribeàself selected; leader; purpose
  • Tribesàinsiders and outsiders (defines by who and who’s not there)
  • What matter is how connected we are
    • More powerful the connectionàmore quality the tribe is
  • Tribes
    • Want movement
    • Side to side thing
    • Tight tribeànot easy to become; when you’re in you’re in
    • Big tribeàeasy to join
    • Hard to be tight and big at same time
    • Not everyone wants to join tribe
  • Simple ideaàfind someone who is naturally leading and give them platform to do it
  • True leadership
    • Have to do something that people will criticize
  • About leading, not controlling
  • Most want to be sheep (no one follows them)…no one follows mediocre
  • Be a Hereticàdon’t let rules of religion get in way of faith
    • A heretic is someone who’s faith is so deep that they go against status quo of organization
  • Faith vs. Religion
    • Faithàtribe built on this
    • Religionàtools to control people
    • Hereitics challenge religion and embrace the faith
  • Growthàneed unicorn in the balloon factory
  • Leaders
    • Challenge tribe
    • Intentionally create culture
    • Curiosity (pushing/probing)
    • Charismaàpush buttons wrong way
    • Communicateàhow, when, what…talk with tribe
    • Connect
    • Commit to tribe
  • Tribe want to
    • Connect
    • Create meaning
    • Make a difference
    • Be noticed
    • Matter (want to be missed)

 

Craig Groeschelàtalk 6 (finding it when you’ve lost it)

  • “it”
    • God makes it happen
    • We can’t create it
    • It is not a model; result of programs
    • Its has a upside (lives changed forever)
    • It has a downside (attracts critics)
  • I must have it above everything else
    • “it”àbeing overwhelmed by presenc of God to be instrument and be consumed by this
  • He was a United Methodist Pastor while in Seminary
  • God speakingàsome time He is too loud to be audible
  • When motive change; we are loosing “it”
    • Spending minutes with God instead of hours
    • Sermon about bringing people instead of obedience to God
  • To regain “it”àgot to do something drastic
  • Prayers to regain “it”
    • God Stretch Me
    • God Heal Me
    • God Ruin Me
  • There is more in me
  • God ruin me like I was when I was first saved….return me to weeping and mourning…break my heart….cause my heart to break for the things that break God’s heart.
