Righteous Judgment: “Necesity to pass from death to life”

John 5:22 and 24
“In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge. “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death to life.”

In this text I am reminded that one of the chief roles of the Son (Jesus) is to judge. The claim of Christianity is that Jesus has the role of judging. Within that role Jesus gives us the criteria for the judgment. Judgment is based upon listening to His message and believing in the God who sent Him. For those that listen and believe they “have” eternal life.

What a beautiful picture of judgment. So often we associate judgment with a negative tense but it is only through this judgment that we may “have” eternal life. As it is currently we are dead. Dead, that’s right, Dead! You or I are not alive outside of the judgment of Jesus. We are only able to experience life; to pass from death to life through this judgment. And this eternal life is not something to come, Jesus says we “have” it, right now as a listener and believer of Jesus and the one who sent Him I “have” eternal life. I am alive through this righteous judgment!!!
