Under the Broom Tree: “being nourished for the journey”
I Kings 19:7 “then the angel of the Lord came again and touched him and said, “Get up and eat some more, or the journey ahead will be too much for you.”
Elijah is on the run and he is wiped out and collapses under the broom tree for a rest. God meets him in this place and gives him something to eat. God tells him to eat for the journey ahead requires it.
How true!!! How often do we find ourselves trying to make this journey of life on our own or to actually journey God’s call upon our lives with our own power? How often do we find ourselves underneath the broom tree ready to throw in the towel? A couple of insights grab my attention this morning. First, I realize that I cannot make the journey on my own. If I try to live out God’s call upon my life on my own power or even to live “on my own” I will always end up collapsed underneath the broom tree. Second, it is through the nourishment of God that I am able to make this journey. Through God’s empowering grace I am able and equipped to run the race that is before me. Today I am thankful for the reminder that it is not up to me and my own power but I sit underneath the broom tree and God’s comes to me in the quietness of these moments and feeds my soul to nourish me for the journey ahead. Through God’s empowerment I rise from the underneath the broom tree and run the race before me today.
Peace!
