Deception of the heart: “The Fuel that turns us away from Jesus”

Deuteronomy 11:16 “But be careful.  Do not let your hearts be deceived so that you turn away and serve and worship other gods.”

There is a strong emphasis in scripture on loving God with all our hearts, minds, and souls.  Jesus actually says this is the greatest commandment.  We see in this verse that our hearts are capable of being deceived and the result of that deception is turning away and serving others gods.  When my heart turns away from Jesus and to myself my first action is to point my worship toward myself and away from Jesus.  When I am deceived into thinking that I am really serving God when in fact I’m pursuing my own agenda I end up turning away from Jesus and serving another god.  There are times in my life that I feel distant from God; as if He is no where to be found.  Perhaps its not that God has become distant but that my heart is being deceived and in the deception I have turned to another god and away from Jesus.  My hope and prayer today is that God will give me the grace to turn to Him; that my heart will not be deceived but remain true to the God that has freed me from the penalty of sin and it shaping me into His servant through Jesus Christ.

Lord, help us all to focus in on you and protect our hearts from being deceived by the desires of our sinful flesh.  Amen.
