Pursuing Justice: The key to staying in the Land

Deuteronomy 16:20 “Let True Justice prevail, so you may live and occupy the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”

Justice is so close to the heart of God that the Israelites ability to practice true justice is directly correlated to them living in the land God is giving them.  The first thing that strikes me today is that God is giving us a land to occupy.  God is giving you a land to occupy.  However, our/your/my ability to live in this land is tied to our ability to allow Justice to prevail.  Maybe a reason that so many churches are “loosing” the land God has given them is because Justice is far from their hearts.  We continue to worship God with our lips but when it comes to our hearts living out that which we confess through the eyes of Justice we fail miserably.  One of the greatest challenges/opportunity in front of the church today in American culture is how we can take our message of salvation to be “the” instrument and reason for our fight for Justice.  We must let the message of salvation (wholistic redemption of the whole world) be the source of our demand for Justice within a world ruled by injustice.  Anything else is unacceptable and grounds to be evicted from the land God has given us.  With great gifts come great responsibility and we can live into this responsibility through the grace of God.
